Dear Lorca students, families, faculty and community,
It's our 10th academic year as a Lorca Elementary School Community! I am thrilled to share my reflections with you!
I remember the first time I walked into Lorca's beautiful, sparkling lobby and was immediately overwhelmed with joy at the thought of our children, families and staff arriving for opening day on September 7, 2010! Thankfully, I had hired an awesome staff of dedicated professionals who have devoted themselves to the outstanding work we celebrate today at Lorca!
During the past 9 years, our students have benefited from the expertise of caring and nurturing teachers and staff offering curriculum enrichment through numerous partnerships with Opera for All, Computer Science for All, The Museum of Science and Industry, LEAP Innovations, Lego Robotics, Facing History, Columbia University, University of Illinois - Chicago, and John Hopkins University. At Lorca, we believe that learning extends beyond our classroom walls as our students participate in experiential field trips to the Logan Square Theater, Museum of Mexican Fine Arts, Lego Land, The Chicago History Museum, Robert Morris University, The Holocaust Museum and visiting our state and nation's capitol, Springfield and Washington, DC, respectively! Mostly recently, Lorca has received grants to support global awareness of conservation, community gardens and world language with The Jonathon Toews Foundation, Whole Foods Foundation, Elkay Water, and Chinese Bridge Delegation.
In addition to the superior educational programs, all our students are well-rounded and ready as they learn about physical education, health, fitness, digital citizenship, media library, technology, visual arts and music taught by our fantastic Specials teachers! With the support of our Local School Council and faculty, we hope to reach our goal of 1:1 classroom technology for on-line blended learning as we implement our continuous improvement work plan and personalized learning blueprint.
Also this school year, we are honored to receive additional funding from Mayor Lightfoot and CPS to expand our full-day preschool programs to ensure all preschoolers are ready for kindergarten! At Lorca, we are focused on equity education as all students and families are supported in a safe and welcoming environment by our Main Office staff, security staff, parent workers, kindergarten classroom assistants, Case Manager, Counselor, Social Worker, English Language Program teacher and multilingual administrative team!
I am grateful everyday to celebrate Lorca's continuous student achievement and lasting impacts our former students have achieved: exemplars at neighborhood high schools, exceeding at selective enrollment high schools, attaining full scholarships to numerous colleges and universities, pursuing careers and overall, giving back to our city!
I welcome you to come and visit Lorca Elementary School where we live our SOS school motto daily:
At Lorca, we are advancing our SCHOOL by collaborating with OTHERS to become our best SELVES!
Mrs. July Cyrwus,
